The Pack contains associated resources for the learning experience, typically in the form of articles and videos. There is a teacher Pack (with only teacher information) and a student Pack (which contains only student information). As a teacher, you can toggle between both to see everything.
Here are the teacher pack items for Important People of the Civil War:
Overview In this experience, students examine how the choices individuals made during the Civil War were significant by investigating the actions and contributions of a range of people involved in the conflict. First, students consider how the choices individuals make during times of conflict can be significant. Next, students explore snapshots of Civil War figures to select an individual to research and develop questions that will help them investigate that individual’s contributions and significance during the war. Then, students locate and analyze primary and secondary sources to investigate their individual’s actions, decisions, and perspectives, evaluating how those contributions were significant in shaping events. After that, the Elaborate scene invites students to participate in a gallery walk to examine how the actions and contributions of many different individuals together shaped the Civil War. Finally, in the Evaluate scene, students reflect on their confidence in locating, evaluating, and using credible and relevant sources for research. Estimated Duration: 45–60 minutes Objectives:
Students work in small groups for the Explore and Explain scenes and may also do so in the Elaborate scene, if included. Consider previewing all activities to inform groupings.
The Elaborate scene is optional. However, completing this scene is encouraged, as it gives students additional time to learn about other groups’ research and ask questions about significant individuals from the Civil War, which will support their thinking and writing in the Evaluate scene.

Conflict has occurred many times and in many places throughout history. Consider how individual choices relate to these moments, and then share your thoughts in the discussion wall.
How can the choices individuals make during times of conflict have significance?
After students respond to the discussion wall, guide a brief conversation to help them unpack what makes an individual’s choices significant in moments of conflict. Use the image to anchor the discussion in the idea that wars are shaped by decisions made in real time, often under pressure. Press students to move from general statements to explanation by asking: What makes a choice significant during a conflict rather than just a personal decision? and How can one person’s choice affect what happens to others or to events during a war? Encourage students to draw on examples they already know to support their thinking. Close by reinforcing that significance is tied to impact and consequences, a lens students will continue to use as they examine individuals throughout the research experience.
In this experience, you will learn how the choices and actions of individuals during the Civil War mattered by examining why what people did influenced how the war unfolded and what it meant for the nation.
