Overview In this experience, students learn about the exploration of the Louisiana Territory by Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery and Zebulon Pike. They read some of the travel journals of Lewis and Clark and then create a series of journal entries of their own. Note teacher pack includes links to interesting background material on the Lewis and Clark expedition. Students will collaborate in small groups for scene 2 to scene 4. Objective:
After the Treaty for the purchase of the Louisiana Territory was signed in 1803, Thomas Jefferson was anxious to explore what lay west of the Mississippi. He was hoping the new land might offer an all-water route across North America that would connect the Mississippi River system to the Pacific Ocean.
He also wondered…would there be mountains of salt? Or, herds of wooly mammoths and giant ground sloths? He decided there was only one way to find out, so he hired an expert frontiersman to explore and map the northern area of the territory.
Objective:
Jefferson hired Meriwether Lewis who was his personal secretary and trusted friend. Lewis put together a team of experts, including William Clark, and set out on one of the greatest explorations of all time.
Lewis, Clark, and the Corps of Discovery departed from St. Louis in May of 1804 and traveled nearly 8,000 in three years down the Ohio River, up the Missouri River, and through the Continental Divide to the Pacific Ocean.What are some of the supplies that the Corps of Discovery would need to bring on this expedition? Remind students that the expedition took place in 1803 and they should be sure to list only items that existed during that time. Also, mention that Lewis and Clark traveled on foot, on horseback, or by wagon—so they could only carry the most essential items.
