Overview In this experience, students are introduced to American culture by watching a popular movie trailer in Japanese with Spanish subtitles. They consider the global influence of American culture. Then they learn about various aspects of American culture, choosing one aspect and researching it to create a presentation. Finally, students reflect on the cultural impacts of technology in the United States. Objectives:
The United States is home to many cultural traditions, communities, and ways of life. Music, food, art, language, clothing, celebrations, and entertainment in the United States have been shaped by Indigenous peoples, immigration, regional traditions, and many different communities over time.
Because of this, there is no single way to describe American culture. In this experience, you will explore some of the cultural patterns found in the United States and examine how different groups and traditions have influenced life in the country.
Objectives:
To begin your exploration of American culture and society, look at the trailer for the movie Frozen 2.
What do you notice about the trailer? What does it say about the culture of the United States?
Discuss student responses. Guide them to see that the translation reveals that the movie appeals to an audience beyond just English-speakers. It also suggests that some American viewers will be speakers of Spanish. Ask students “What influence do you think American movies like Frozen have around the world?”
