Overview
In this experience, students learn about two Mexican cultural expressions: the celebration of the Day of the Dead and the artist Frida Kahlo. They explore the cultural aspects of both. Then they research and share other forms of Mexican cultural expression with the group.
Students will collaborate in small groups for scene 3.
Objectives:
What words come to mind when you look at the photo? In a word or short phrase, share an idea with your classmates. To list more than one, separate your ideas with a comma.
Record what you know and what you would like to know about Day of the Dead. If you don’t know anything yet, that’s okay. That’s what this experience is for.
Discuss what students already know about the Day of the Dead. Guide them to frame some questions they have about it moving forward. Remind them that celebrations are one form of cultural expression. One of the best ways to learn about a person or people group is to explore the cultural traditions they value.
