Overview In this experience, students explore the cultural and ethnic groups that make up Canadian society and create a pie chart to represent population data. They then read Canada’s official multiculturalism policy and examine how it describes the relationship between Canadian society and different cultural traditions. Objective:
Canada is home to people with many different cultural traditions, languages, religions, and backgrounds. Over time, immigration, Indigenous cultures, French and British influences, and communities from around the world have all helped shape Canadian society.
In 1971, Canada adopted an official federal policy of multiculturalism. The policy recognizes that people can participate in Canadian society while also maintaining cultural traditions that are important to them. Multiculturalism later became part of Canadian federal law.
In this experience, you will explore some of the cultural influences that have shaped Canadian society and examine Canada’s official multiculturalism policy.
