Learning Experiences (Lessons) in Inquiry & Research Each learning experience takes about 45 minutes to teach in the device-enabled classroom.
Generating Inquiry Questions
Students work in groups to generate questions on a topic to gather information for a research project. They learn about the 5Ws, fact trees, and how to make their questions specific to clarify the results they seek. They differentiate between informal and formal inquiries.
Students learn to search for information online. First, they use detailed search terms to find relevant information. Then they refine search terms to improve their results. Finally, they complete a graphic organizer to demonstrate their understanding of the information they have gathered.
Primary and Secondary Sources
Students learn to differentiate between primary and secondary sources. Next they evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each type of source. Then they conduct a search to identify primary and secondary sources for a given topic. Finally they use the sources they found to write a short informative piece.
In Your Own Words
Students explore what plagiarism is. Then they learn tips for successful paraphrasing and they practice the skill. Finally, they learn to cite sources and develop a bibliography.
