In this experience, students are introduced to the idea of political parties. They explore a brief history of U.S. political parties and work in small groups to research the origins, time period, and important figures and beliefs of several parties. Finally, they create a logo to represent their researched party.

This experience is best completed in conjunction with Political Parties Today.

Students will work in small groups in scenes 3 and 4. Each group will research one of eight different political parties, so try to have at least eight groups.

  • Identify important figures and beliefs of early U.S. political parties.


In today’s experience, you’ll learn about the history of the political parties in the United States—a history that goes back to the very beginning of the nation.

Think of the words republican and democrat. In a word or short phrase, list something that those words represent. To list more than one, separate your ideas with a comma, like this: George, Martha.

A political party is an organized group of people who:

  • share similar ideas and beliefs about how government should work
  • try to get their candidates elected to political office
