Next students learn some basic economic concepts in order to understand the Republic’s debt; you may choose to skip this scene. The Texans had won the Revolution and the Republic of Texas was now an independent country. But the problems did not end with the retreat of the Mexican Army. When Sam Houston was elected the first president of Texas, he was faced with many issues that made life in Texas very difficult. In this lesson you will learn about some of these issues and how Houston handled them.
