Unit Vocabulary


Once Spain closed the missions in Texas, the great empire lost its interest in this northern frontier. Soon, Mexico itself would be trying to break away from Spain. In this unit you are going to learn about Texas under the Mexican flag and the arrival of settlers from the United States.

Objective

  • Learn vocabulary related to the Mexican colonial age in Texas.


This lesson builds your vocabulary with words you will use in this unit. The words are:


  • agriculture: the science of growing plants and raising animals for food
  • Anglo: someone who comes from a heritage of English language and culture
  • culture: the set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and arts that characterizes a group of people
  • empresario: a person who makes all the arrangements to bring settlers to a Spanish or Mexican colony
  • immigration: movement into a new country
  • independence: freedom from a controlling force, the right to self-government
  • land grant: an area of land given to a settler by the government

  • representative government: a political system where the people elect representatives who create the laws and policies
  • Tejano: a Texan of Spanish or Mexican origin, creating a mixed culture of Spanish and Anglo traditions in Texas

You learned in the last unit that the Spanish missions in Texas got their livelihood from agriculture, which is the science of growing plants and raising animals for food.
