Overview In this experience, students create a case study of an example of Japanese imperialism. First they predict on a map which countries Japan controlled. Then they read some background material about Japanese imperialism. Next they develop inquiry questions and conduct research to answer them. Then they follow the writing process to create a written case study. Finally, they evaluate their work using a rubric. There is no quiz at the end of the experience. Instead, students will self-evaluate their case stu using a rubric. The rubric is available in the Student Pack for students to review before they begin work on their case studies. At each stage, give students a time framework for their tasks. Be sure to set the duration of the experience to fit your projected time framework. Objectives
A case study is a detailed examination of a single thing in order to understand a complex matter and to make generalizations. In this lesson, you will learn about Japanese imperialism and you will write a case study.
Objectives
The title of this lesson already tells you that Japan also built an empire. On the map below, predict what regions were controlled by Japan from the late nineteenth century until the outbreak of World War II.
This exercise is intended to familiarize students with the general political geography of the Pacific countries. They are not expected to know the exact boundaries of Imperial Japan.
