The Growth of Terrorism
Students create a word cloud of their associations with the word terrorism. Then they review different definitions of terrorism and create a chart of three characteristics. Next they learn about different categories of terrorism. Then they analyze the motivations behind extremist Islamic terrorism. Finally they create an infographic about a relatively new phenomenon—cyberterrorism.

The word terrorism stems from the Latin word terrere, meaning “fear.” The French used the word terrorism during the French Revolution for what they called the Reign of Terror (1793-94). During this period the new government punished people it thought opposed the French Revolution. They were often put to death by official state-sponsored violence. Robespierre himself described terrorism as a “virtuous form of violence.”
