Students learn about government revenue and spending in Texas. First, they study revenue sources and categories of spending from the 2016"“17 Texas state budget. Then they learn how local governments raise funds, and they explain why local governments are interested in attracting businesses to benefit from property taxes. Finally, they examine sources of funding for public education in Texas.

The Texas state government provides services in many areas: public safety and health, education, roads and transportation, and general government expenses. The local governments also provide services. How do the governments fund all these services? In this experience, you will learn how the government raises, budgets, and spends its money.

  • Explain how local government raises revenue to pay for services.
  • Describe how Texas finances public education.
