Texas in the Civil War

Students label the six flags that have flown over Texas. Then they learn about the hardships on the Texas home front during the Civil War. Next they examine a map of the battles that took place in the South to infer why there were so few battles on Texas soil. Finally they learn about the end of the war and they create a poster celebrating Juneteenth.

When some southern states seceded from the United States, they left the Union and formed their own country, called the Confederate States of America. This happened after growing disagreements over slavery and the South’s fears that slavery would end. At first, it was not yet certain that there would be a war.

In Charleston Harbor, Confederate forces demanded that U.S. troops surrender Fort Sumter. Instead, Major Robert Anderson moved his soldiers from Fort Moultrie to Fort Sumter, a stronger fort in the harbor. Soon, Confederate forces opened fire on Fort Sumter. The Civil War had begun. In this lesson, you will learn about the role of Texas in the Civil War.

You may be familiar with the Confederate flag design shown above. This design began as a battle flag used by Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. In 1863, the Confederacy adopted a new national flag that included this battle flag design in the corner. Throughout this course, you have learned about the six national flags that have flown over Texas.
