Message written on chalkboard: Welcome to School, with the word school misspelled

Imagine it’s the first day of school, and you walk into the classroom and see this message on the board. What would be your first reaction? Would you giggle? Figure it was just a silly mistake? Would you want to correct your new teacher? The teacher would probably be feeling pretty embarrassed right now.

As you can see, spelling is pretty important when it comes to getting your message across. When you write, you need to pay attention to your spelling to make sure your writing is clear. Incorrect spelling can impact your reader’s understanding of what you write. There are many spelling rules and tricks to help you remember how to spell commonly used words. In this experience, you will learn and practice some spelling rules.

Did you hear the story about the woman who sent a sympathy message to a friend following a death in the family, and she signed it LOL because she thought the abbreviation meant “Lots Of Love”? She was very embarrassed to learn that it usually means “Laugh Out Loud.”

Write a message in typical messaging shorthand, using at least one messaging abbreviation (for example, LOL).

Post your answer

Now read your classmates’ messages and respond to one or more of them by posting at least two ways to interpret the message.

Gives students a few minutes to have fun with the activity. Then lead them in a discussion on why correct spelling can be important to communicating one’s message.
