Overview In this experience, students learn about the experiences of Civil War soldiers, including the role of African-American soldiers in the North and the South. Then, students read about women who served as soldiers during the Civil War and prepare a biography about one of the women who served. Objectives:
Almost three million soldiers fought during the Civil War—two million for the Union side and 750,000 for the Confederates. Most soldiers were younger than 25 years old and had worked as farmers, carpenters, blacksmiths, mechanics, merchants, and teachers prior to joining the army and navy. These men joined the military, fought tirelessly, and often lost their lives supporting the cause they believed in.
Objectives:
Why do you think men would choose to join the Union or Confederate military ranks?
In a word or short phrase, describe why men might have chosen to join the military. To list multiple items, separate them with a comma like this: soldier, sailor.
Ask students to share some of the entries. Students might have posted words like bravery, dedication, protection, Union, Confederate, lifestyle, freedom, commitment, pride, abolish slavery, etc. Mention that many Union soldiers fought for the preservation of the Union, patriotism, and pride in the nation. Some federal soldiers were fighting to abolish slavery.
