Students learn the type of government of each of the countries of Southeast Asia. Then they research and write their own definitions for those types of government. Next, they investigate the economy of the various countries in Southeast Asia including important imports and exports as well as key events or factors in the economy. Finally, students write a news report on a current event in one country's government or economy.

Overview:

In this experience, students learn the type of government of each of the countries of Southeast Asia. Then they research and write their own definitions for those types of government. Next, they investigate the economy of the various countries in Southeast Asia, including important imports and exports as well as key events or factors in the economy. Finally, students write a news report on a current event in one country’s government or economy.

Students will work in small groups in scene 3. Divide them into up to ten groups, so that the groups can cover most of the Southeast Asia countries.

Objectives:

  • Identify and compare and contrast the different types of governments in Southeast Asia.
  • Describe and compare and contrast the economies in Southeast Asia.


Southeast Asia is made up of eleven countries with varying types of government and economies. In this experience, you will explore how those countries differ and how they are the same in their governments and economies.

What are some of the ways that societies organize their government? Write a word or short phrase to name government types.

Post your answer

Answers will vary, but likely will include words like democracy, congress, President, king or queen, monarchy, communism, etc. Invite students to state anything they know about how the countries of Southeast Asia organize their governments. Remind them about the democratic government of the United States and what that means in terms of how the government runs the country.
