Passage 1

Hayley arrived at the store late on Friday and found that the store was out of many kinds of supplies. There were no notebooks, and all the packs of sticky notes were in the pale yellow color she hated. It was her last opportunity before school opened, and she would have to go to class unprepared, just like every year. She sighed, turned around, and walked the half mile back to her house, empty-handed.

Passage 2

To begin with, the store was out of notebooks. Naturally! Since I was coming, the place ran out of tape. You know what I mean. Of course that’s not what happened, but sometimes it feels like the world is out to get me. The real explanation was that it was the last week in August and every kid in America was purchasing school supplies. And of course, I was late. Being unprepared annoys me. So why do I always do it?
