Bill of Rights in Action Scenarios

Scenario 1

A local newspaper publishes an article criticizing the city government’s handling of road construction projects. City officials claim the article contains inaccurate information that could damage public trust in the city government. The city threatens legal action unless the newspaper removes the article from its website.

Scenario 2

A group of residents plans a protest outside the state capitol to oppose a new law. State officials allow the protest but require the group to move to a designated area farther away from the building so that entrances remain clear and security can be maintained.

Scenario 3

Police are searching for a missing child who was last seen near a residential neighborhood. Believing the child may be in immediate danger, officers enter a nearby home without a warrant to search for the child. The child is not found, but during the search, officers discover evidence of illegal financial activity inside the home. The homeowner is later charged with a crime based on that evidence.

Scenario 4

During a criminal trial involving a violent robbery, a witness refuses to answer certain questions, arguing that answering them might reveal their own involvement in the crime. Prosecutors argue that the testimony could help clarify what happened and improve public safety by ensuring the correct person is held responsible. The judge orders the witness to answer the questions.

Scenario 5

A person accused of a serious financial crime waits almost two years before their trial begins. Court officials explain that the delay occurred because investigators needed additional time to review large amounts of financial records and evidence related to the case.

Scenario 6

An owner of a local restaurant is accused of a nonviolent crime and is assigned bail of $500,000. The judge explains that the accused owner previously failed to appear for a court hearing in another case and wants to ensure they return for trial.

Scenario 7

A state passes a law requiring people to complete a safety course and obtain a license before purchasing certain types of firearms. Supporters argue the rule improves public safety, while others believe the requirement places too many restrictions on a constitutional right.

Scenario 8

A popular online content creator films a prank video in which they loudly announce that there is a dangerous gas leak during a crowded community event. The warning is not real, but people nearby panic and rush to leave the area. Several people are injured during the confusion. Authorities later charge the content creator with causing public panic and endangering public safety.
