Take a look at this picture. This is one of the most important inventions of the nineteenth century. This machine transformed the textile industry and accelerated the Industrial Revolution.

What do you think this machine was used for? How do you think this machine would have saved time and money?

Explain to students that this is a photograph of the spinning jenny invented by James Hargreaves. This machine was used to spin yarn into thread. Before the spinning jenny was invented, yarn was spun into thread one spool at a time. The spinning jenny allowed for nine spools to be spun at the same time, thus increasing the amount of thread that was produced at once.

Mention to students that this is one of many innovations that were developed during the Industrial Revolution. In this experience, students will be learning about a number of different important inventions that changed the economy and culture of the United States during the nineteenth century.
